The Las Vegas Regional Clean Cities Coalition (LVRCCC) was formed in
1993 as a locally-based, voluntary public-private partnership. Currently, nearly 100 public and private organizations are involved in LVRCCC.
LVRCCCs genesis is the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct), passed
by Congress with the goal of reducing energy dependence in the U.S.
by 30% by 2010. As part of EPAct, the Clean Cities program was founded
with the mission of helping American transportation systems become more
efficient, less dependent on foreign fuel sources, less environmentally
disruptive and sustainable and safe.
That mission translates to promoting the expanded use of fuels that
are alternatives to gasoline and diesel. Among the alternative fuels
recognized by EPAct are biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, hydrogen, methanol,
natural gas, and propane.
LVRCCC's goals include promoting the use of alternative fuels in
fleets of light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, including transit and school buses, taxis, cargo
vans and trucks. Click here for more on LVRCCC's
goals.
Also part of LVRCCCs mission is to promote the expansion of fueling
infrastructure for alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) a proven
key to making AFVs more convenient and viable to operate. Click
here for local fueling sites.
One of 87 designated Clean Cities across the U.S., LVRCCC is one of the
most active and successful. LVRCCC is financially self-sufficient, relying
on grants, contributions from Board Members, and annual dues from Stakeholders to fund
ongoing operations and projects.
There are several ways to measure LVRCCC’s success – here are two of the most important ones. Greenhouse gas emissions in the Las Vegas region are reduced by 22.6 tons per year, through the use of alternative fuel and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), as well as vehicles using fuel blends. Another measure of success is the fact that the stakeholders are reducing our dependence on foreign oil by using 4.6 million gasoline gallon equivalents per year, rather than gasoline. This is realized through the improved fuel economy of HEVs, alternative fuel vehicle use and the use of biodiesel fuel blends.
Many of the LVRCCC stakeholders have more than 100 vehicles included in our annual report, with some now having more than 500 vehicles. Included among those with 100 or more alternative fuel and advanced transportation vehicles are:
